Point Score Missin' Out Race

I understand how a Missin' Out Race works, but I have only done them on a 200m track with every second lap counting for missin' out. 

What I want to know is: when one is likely to be desperately trying to keep up with all those "youngsters", what do I do when I am following the derny and I can no longer keep up?  If I keep on the derny for more than one lap, which hopefully I can, then I won't be the last rider and so I can't peel off.

If you know you are going to crack, it is courtesy to sprint forward and up to tow the remaining bunch onto the bike.
