Day 2 Hurstvile Oval 30th December 2009 Juniors The Sydney Christmas Carnival made its way to Hurstville Oval for day two of the series and numbers at the junior carnival were stronger with the inclusion of the U11’s and U9’s who were ineligible to ride on the Dunc Gray Velodrome due to age restrictions. The youngster revelled on the on the big outdoor flat track of Sydney. Stand out rider of the junior carnival was Thomas Cornish. He showed he was head and shoulders above his age category when he chased down over 100m to win the 800m handicap, but it was in the combined U9, U11 and U13 Wheel-Race that he showed his true potential. Riding off 20m he mixed it with the U13’s until the final 200m where he shot around the tiring lead riders and put a gap between himself and the rest of the field to take a triumphant win. (http://www.erniesmithphoto.com.au/731%20Xmas%20Carnival%20Hville%2030%2012%2009/thumbs/Img0731_029_thm.jpg) In the U15’s combined Wheel-Race it was Bradley Heap of LACC who showed true grit in starting mid field and following the right wheels till the final lap where he made his move breaking away. Bradley’s father is renowned for making big moves in wheel-races only to fall down in a heap (pun intended) in the final 200m’s. Bradley on the other-hand showed more ticker than his old man and powered home for a convincing win. Title: Re: Day 2 - 30th @ Hurstville Post by: orphic on December 31, 2009, 01:52:17 AM Looks like there's an error in results (and subsequently the point score) for Heat 1 of the womens 1 lap screamers
Should read: 1 Micaela Hogan 34.78 2 Victoria Armstrong 3 Joanne Troutman 4 Gai Monahan I'm sure Joanne can vouch for this, probably Micaela too but she had such a lead she wasn't exactly looking back at us :) Title: Re: Day 2 - 30th @ Hurstville Post by: Artson on December 31, 2009, 02:18:34 AM In response to last two emails

by fats » Thu Dec 31, 2009 1:40 pm http://www.bicycles.net.au/forums/viewtopic.php?f=39&t=21788 30th December 2009 Christmas Carnival day 2- Hurstville Oval Well, what an event Hurstville turned out to be. A real carnival atmosphere, nice weather, heaps of entrants, even the “locals” were coming out to watch. A fairly typical flat suburban 400m track around a cricket field with no real straights to talk about and reeks of history. Had a good warm-up dernying for my two sons, the 4 laps with the 8yo wasn’t too bad but the 7 laps into the wind with the 12yo definitely warmed the legs up. D grade warm up scratch 8 laps: Cruised around not too fast, nobody wanting to do turns because of the breeze, stayed close to the front and sat behind Alchemist for second. D and women’s Wheel race: Everyone was cold due to a half hour crash delay but it didn’t stop a fast start and I was chasing hard from my 60m to stay with the bunch that formed in front of me. I got on a team mates wheel and we gained places and made it to the lead bunch, but then he ended up just getting in my way as when I want to go around him he’d move over and try to get through. He’d make up for it big time later though. Settled for 6th. D Grade 1 lap screamer: Arrived in the midfield late as I made a late decision to flip my rear wheel to an easier gear. Crafty saw me and said “you” pointing at the start which had 3 guy’s already waiting to go and I didn’t have my gloves or helmet on. Getting set he added some commentary to fill the time: “Well these three guy’s combined weight wouldn’t add up to Fats’s gut, and he’s probably the slowest starter here tonight but being a long track he’ll be chasing the guy’s down hard so they had better look out.” Had the crowd chuckling, me included, but I was concentrating and got a great start thanks to my lower gear and starting on the whistle. Two teenagers got ahead but I was right behind them and building up, rounded the first of them around the back, got to the first guy by the last corner, spun my gut’s out and got in front only to feel like my back wheel slipped in the frame or something so backed it off a bit just in case I had a problem then thought stuff it he’s coming back so five more pedals and got it by a nose. First ever 1 lap win. Had to give it everything though to get it, those kids are fast! Found nothing wrong with the bike. The Big Hurt - 16 laps, 4 sprints, winners race: No plans were made with my team mate but you could have thought we did. Both of us sat on the back for the six laps, pace was pretty hot (for D grade!) and I was worrying that I was spinning quite a bit as I kept my easy gear on thinking it would pay of when the legs tired. Good move. Let the others fight out the first sprint (Well done Alchemist) then they slowed down and a younger kid put on a move, so I chased him down, he slowed on the second bell lap and I rounded him for an easy win. Then my team mate went for his win. 2 hard laps and I thought if I can stay close once he wins we can work together and stay away. The effort paid off as once he won the third sprint we closed up and took lap turns to keep a quarter lap advantage. The lower gear was coming into it’s own by now and we improved our lead working together and I had just enough left to get him at the end to take the win. At least that’s how I saw it! Couldn’t hang around for the last race unfortunately but left quite happy with 2 wins, valuable points and a lead in D grade. Alchemist had a great night too, racing strong and taking good points. It’s definitely going to be a hard fought series with 3 rounds to go. BNA Div 4 Challenge: Fats: 20 points Alchemist: 18 points Title: Re: Day 2 - 30th @ Hurstville Post by: Artson on December 31, 2009, 10:55:17 PM (http://www.actionsnaps.com.au/images/zoom/JGLAWC/wmpsc_2965.jpg) Harrison Jones (Bathurst) looking closely at his tyre Photo by David Lane www.actionsnaps.com.au |
