Division 1
Christian Godyn went form the base of Blood to win the Prime. This was a better tactic then his 2018 prime winning move from km zero.
First major break of the day was brought back promptly. The second break of Neppl, Sinteur and Chris Schofield was given a bit of space. At the end of the second lap they had 1min 15 seconds. The gap extended slightly in the last 26km's. At the base of Blood Neppl opened a 5 second lead on Sinteur which he held to the finish 3km latter

The bunch sprint for 3rd was a very close sprint between DHUEZ's Jordon Ross and St George's Luke Cridland. The Photo gave it to Jordon. However both riders received a warning form the Commissaire for 2 infringements. Ross, for moving off his line with the intention of forcing a rider into the outside lane. Cridland for entering the outside lane.

Millington did more than enough to defend the yellow jersey.

Division 2

Kevin Berkeley's defence of the Yellow Jersey was more attack then defence, as he repeatedly tried to get a move going. I am guessing that the bunch came to the base of Blood on the final lap all together when Ben Exerly and Matt Hazard forged a lead. Exley's determination over the top of the climb gapped the Park Life rider and he stayed away for a solid victory.
I believed that Berkleys 3rd place in the bunch sprint was enough to retain the lead however on points calculations he now sits 1 point behind new leader Exerly.

Division 3
On the first assent of Blodd hill Sam Leach surged ahead. He took this as a good omen for the second lap. Sam broke the field over the top of the final climb. At this stage Campbell Fuller was in the second group. Despite their best intentions, the leaders were unable to maintain a gap and the peloton was all together for a bunch gallop. Campbell was not going to waste his good fortune came to the front with 150m to go. A photo had to decide 2nd place

Fuller was all smiles on the podium with the realisation he would be in Yellow for the final Round.

Division 5      across the line
Apparently the 12.5km Neutral zone was a little fast for the div 5 group although you would not have known it when you saw them start. They smashed the first 10km and a large number of riders were dropped early.
Ian Granger jumped away on Blood to take the prime and this forced even more speed out of the group. Thus reducing the size even more. By the finish only 11 riders made it to contest the sprint.
Thomas Muckle was very eager to do well after his good showing at Hez and well he did. The 71 year old the young riders butts.

On Age adjusted Thomas won that by an even bigger margin. I have had a lot of positive feedback about the age adjusted format of Div 5, there has been some negative feedback as well. The concept of the Div 5 is an added grade to ensure there is a race for all masters but the balance of trying to keep this divisions intensity less. Not an easy task.
I have noted an interesting Pattern in the ages of the top 7 riders on Points
71, 69, 61, 71, 61, 71, 71
(7 to 1 +71)

Want to join in for the next two races?

If you rode Round 1 @ HEZ and want to apart of 3-race series you can upgrade to the full series for $55. This will give you entry into the Calga round 2, June 23 and the final round July 14 @ Eastern Creek Raceway (not Dragway)

By starting each of the races you will automatically go into the draw to win a CERVELO Disc Frame Set valued at lots $$. The current odds of winning this fantastic prize is 1 in 70 (which if you know odds is great value)

What do you need to do?

Your name will already be on the start sheets at Calga with an asterisk next to it, you simply sign on and pay for the entry.

About Calga: It is an undulating 26km lap course (out and back) The course suits both powerful punchy climbers and sprinters almost equally. The way out to the turnaround is predominantly uphill which makes the return leg extremely fast. This speed is interrupted by the feature climb aptly named “Blood Hill” this 600m long bump can be the launching pad for a winning move, however the riders will need to be super strong as the 3.2km to the finish is again fast and slightly downhill. Generally, the riders are not exposed to the wind too much at Calga but if it is up for the day expect some real tough racing and leave the deep-dish front at home. The road surface is not as smooth as HEZ so a slightly lower tyre pressure may assist some.

Points after Round 3

The 2019 CERVELO Series division winners

EXCEL attachment has full breakdown

Div 1 series report
Jordan Ross form Dhuez Racing consistently won the bunch sprint in rounds 1 and 2. With a win in the final round it moved the likable rider into the top spot. To add to his rewards he is now ranked the #1 NSW masters rider. In my opinion despite Dhuez’s dominance rider of the series is St Georges Luke Cridland. In every round he ensured he gave himself a chance of winning and my opinion this deserves to be recognised

Div 2 series report
Wow what a series.  Ben Exely entered the final round with a 1-point buffer over Kevin Berkeley. Mutually these two riders basically had one job and that was to cross the line before the other. The determination of both riders was easy to see as they crossed the line 2nd and 3rd against NSW’s best master sprinters.

Div 3 series report

A last lap puncture by Matt Green scuttled his chances of the series win whist Campbell Fuller was playing a cagy game of “I don’t give a F”  His attitude was warranted due to the fact of, if he didn’t get up in the H’cap format he would win the series.
In the end it didn’t matter as Campbell sprinted for a 3rd place and thus secured the series.

Div 4 series report
Only one winner and what a win. The leader going into the final round was Bicisport rider David Brown, he had a 2-point lead over Justin Wollard. Essentially David went into the race knowing all he had to do was finish 1 place behind Justin for the series victory. However, no one counted on Blake Callen winning the race outright! This awarded him 10 points for the win and 3 points bonus for being the first Div 4 rider. A nervous wait ensured as the two riders attempted to do the math. On calculations Justin and Blake scored equal points! The tie breaker definition was clearly outlined prior to the event and the highest position on the final round would take precedence. Congratulations Blake Callen.

Div 5 Series Report
Wow what a final with the top two riders finishing on equal points. It came down to who finished highest on the final stage and that was of course old man Harry! Despite the many detractors of the lowest grade I believe it has merit. I will be looking to feedback for determining if this grade is needed in the future.

Div 3 Report

words by someone in the race.

With 40+ riders it was always going to be a tough ask for a breakaway to get established and stay away in the Div 3 race. The problem was, if a break didn't make it to the end, we may as well have given first place to Nigel Perry before we started - if he's there with a sniff of the finish line, he's a sure bet.

The first lap saw a few riders take a stab off the front but everything was back together at the bottom of the finishing straight for the prime. It looked like it was going to be an all in sprint but the real contenders came to the front and an Illawarra ride took the $20 almost uncontested after showing how serious he was about getting his fuel money for the trip home.

The following few laps saw a big bunch being peppered with attacks by ones, twos and threes but nothing looked overly serious before a few of the stronger riders like Alan Chapman Keith Harris and Mel Breaden came to the front to restore order. That didn't stop the likes of Glen Elton and Adam Kimberley from the CCCC having repeated attempts to break the chain hold of the bunch with the assistance of riders from Muswellbrook, Hunter District and Lidcombe Auburn Clubs.

With two las to go, the wind was up and it was looking more and more like a bunch sprint was in order.

Not wanting to make it too easy for Mr Perry, Andy Hellmich got in the ear of Rod Latham from Illawarra and suggested they give it a go on the next turn around. The thinking was, with Rod's help, his strong looking mates and the other Coasties may not chase. And with the help of a couple other committed riders, the break could stick. It was worth a try.

Four riders jumped at the turn around, dug super deep and got a decent gap. All four put their heads down before one rider pushed himself into the red and had to ease up. It was down to three.

The bunch realised the danger and started the chase and it was good to see other Coasties, Ben Patterson and David Ashton helping the chase - no collusion here and everyone racing for themselves. The women in the bunch weren't shirking the work but the chase was a little disorganised for too long and the break pulled out a handy lead.

With 4km to go, Campbell Fuller of RBCC had been redlining for the last lap and yelled at the other two boys to go on without him.

It was down to two.

Rod and Andy swapped consistently till the last corner when Andy took the back seat. Rod pushed it all the way to the line but Andy had a just enough in the tank for the last 50m and pipped Rod in the finishing straight.

With the bunch still coming ow strong, Campbell held on for 3rd and almost got back to contest the sprint when Andy and Rod started stalling before the sprint.

Michel Nijland of Muswellbrook won the bunch kick from a some what interested Nigel Perry. Melanie Breadman of HD was the first female and came in just in front of Ruth Strapp of Bicisport and Katie Banerjee or Harlequin.

All in all, a great race with plenty of action and great to see a break rewarded after some solid riding.
