Explain these races
Keirin- The keirin is a motorpaced event that is very popular in Japan where it originated. In that country, huge amounts of money are bet on races and professional keirin riders command impressive salaries. It is similar to the match sprint, but features 6-8 riders on the track. A derny motorbike paces the riders from 25 km/h up to 45 km/h for the first few laps. During this time, riders jostle each other for the best position and this is often the roughest part of the event. With two and a half laps to go, the derny bike pulls off and the sprint is on. Team tactics are important here, as the leadout is often quite long. If one team can get two of their riders in the final, then they are at a distinct advantage. reference www.cyclingnews.com

Motorpace- A derny motorbike paces the riders from the start at 45 km/h for the first few laps. The Derny rider will up the pace to a steady 48km/h. During this time, riders will rotate positions completing a max of one lap behind the derny. With about four laps to go, the derny bike pulls off and a standard scratch race starts. This event is intended to be an endurance race, with the pace of the derny ensuring fatigue has set in by the time it swings off.

•   VIE13 are not only the Klub Challenge sponsor they are also sponsoring a KUSTOM KEIRIN Series.
•   Round 2's Keirins will contribute to the TWE points series, however they will also be a qualifier for the KUSTOM KEIRIN finals.
•   The top 4-6 riders from each grade will qualify for Round 3 KUSTOM KEIRIN final.
•   Round 3 will not carry points but will have prizes for the winner.

EXAMPLE of qualifiers when your grade has:
•   2 heats = Top 3 of each heat qualify
•   3 heats = Top 2 of each heat qualify
•   4+ heat = winner only qualifies

RAW Track    

Low numbers at RAW this week mostly due to this weekend’s Hunter Junior tour but also possibly relating to an amazing TDF in 2019. However, this meant that we could bust out some longer than expected races.

 The Skingrowsback Women’s Wheelrace was won by LACC’s Laura Brienesse, who managed to regain the leaders after a poor start. Laura also managed to hold off the late charge by Tess Wallace the Scratch marking in the final metres. RAW track is so privileged to have Skingrowsback as a long-standing supporter and sponsor.

Stand out ride of the night was in the Div 4 Madi-lead. Andy Vernon was the only rider who could hold on to the Madison leaders. The rest of div 4 managed to form a solid chase group. Andy built a lead of 100m when the Madison riders swung up with 6 laps remaining.  Andy held on to his diminishing lead for 5 laps and 210m’s only being caught by Tom Stillwell (whom I will continue to say is in the wrong grade).

The Div 1 leader is Daniel Googe who has strung together 3 weeks of being the top scorer. Daniel was not on my radar at the start of the season but nor was Julian Alaphilippe on my radar for the TDF.

Former RAW series winner Tirian McManus completely stamped his authority over all other riders winning the TWE series by over 70 points to DHBC Tom Bolton. Tirian was about to enter into the form of his life and later secured a ride in the lucrative a European 6 day event where he successfully won one of the nights however succumbed to a collarbone snapping fall on night 5.
 Again in 2016 we were able to support and assist our RAW track juniors (read 2) who had been selected to represent Australia at the Jnr Worlds. I sincerely hope we can continue this tradition.
Dulwich Hill again dominated the points for Hillbrick challenge but had to fend off a Challenge by Randwick Botany  whom had ranked second on points for the series but lacked the overall firepower to win the Italian Challenge.  

2017
The attendance at RAW Track hit record lows with some nights achieving less than 70 riders. RAW had now become a financial liability to owner Paul Craft. However the true value of RAW was evident in this years serries winner "Tom Cornish" who had started RAW at the age of 12 in Div 5 and progressed through the divisions not only into Div 1 but to the top of it. Tom had a tough year though with non-selection into the Junior Worlds Team. Instead of kicking up a stink he focussed on 2018 and made RAW Track an important stepping stone for his ambitions.
The Teams challenge had wo rivals go Head to head. St George V's Dulwich Hill. there would be no repeat of DHBC surprising StGcc in the Italian and Australia's powerhouse club took out the series.


2018
Some changes were made to encourage attendance for 2018. Most importantly the start time was delayed from 7pm to 7:30pm. I don't think it is just me getting old and grumpy, I sincerely believe the traffic in Sydney town has increased dramatically. Bass Hill has never been the easiest place to drive to on a Friday afternoon. Although many rejoiced the latter start the numbers only marginally increased, placing the series in jeopardy of  extinction.
The winner of the Series was Shaun McWilliams, Shaun had started RAW Track many years ago to hang out with his hipster mates. All of whom were beer drinking, pot smoking, tattooed, beard wearing and most importantly Fixie riding (and that was just the girls). The Syd Skids gang had an amazing influence on the atmosphere of RAW however long after Hipsters stopped being the coolest kids on the block Shaun remained at RAW and he was fast. He was equally at home in the endurance events as well. The battle between Shaun and another RAW track prodigy Blake Ryan was fantastic.

Amazingly in the VIE13 KLUB Challenge (note new sponsor) we had a new club on the leader board. ATTA-nsw. This predominately junior team had promoted RAW so much and attended on a regular basis enough to challenge for the lead on points. Although they missed out on the minor premiership by a few points they held their heads high on their way to defeat in the Italian Pursuit against St George CC.

Explain these races
Win’N’ Out This is the opposite of a Miss’N’Out race. After a designated number of laps a whistle is blown for the first sprint. The winner of the first sprint is deemed the winner of the race and allowed to carefully withdraw from the race. Each proceeding lap sprint will produce the consecutive places from 2nd to 4th. Tip if you go for a sprint make sure you win it.

Madilead- The pace in this race is set by a Madison team (see Madison). The bunch follows the Madison team for ??laps until, with 5 laps remaining the Madison leaders take off leaving the bunch to sought out the winner in scratch race style finish. The Idea of this race is to allow the lower grades to experience following a Madison change (which is a key skill in learning to ride a madison). The pace of this race can often change with the experienced leaders putting in a few hard attacks to stir up the bunch.

Madison- A high speed, two person continuous  race relay.  Think of tag team wrestling meets track cycling - while one partner is racing the other is resting at the top of the track. This race is named after Madison Square Garden in New York where the event was first held. Two man teams contest the event. which is typically an endurance event. Only one rider from each team is allowed in the race at a given time, meaning that teams must take it in turn each lap (or more) to have a rider in the race. Changeovers are quite dangerous, but impressive to watch when done well - one rider circles around waiting for his teammate, who joins hands and imparts his momentum to the slower rider. Stand out rides of the Sprint series
Well let’s start with the best of the best Daniel Googe: To be completely honest Daniel was lacking the top end speed, tactical experience and essentially outclassed by Daniel Rickard and Shane Dirks (both national champions and 1 X World Champion). This was very much evident in the first sprint.
However what Daniel wasn’t lacking was determination. I don’t know who got into his ear but6 Daniel came out in the second round with a nothing to lose attitude and it worked. With clever tactics and no deer in headlights composure he duly won sprint 2.
Daniel road to the start line 7-foot-tall and full of confidence but Rickard and Dirks did not! End of story.
Possibly the best competition was the James Schneider, Adam Ingall and Hayden Smith battle. Each rider shared a position in each sprint thus ending up on equal points (6 apiece).  The win went to Adam by virtue of being highest placed in the final round.  I thought the battle was over however round 4 was on the infield as each rider discussed their individual approach to sprinting. I think the final outcome was 6 points apiece.

Congratulations to all riders who participated in the sprint night. I was concerned that riders would leave the venue feeling that they hadn’t got value for money. However, talking to rider’s post event I was happy to discover that everyone was appropriately fatigued form the high intensity racing. Whilst I have congratulated the riders my greatest gratitude goes to my team of officials and result keepers, whom worked continuously with no let up to conduct and record 203 results for the night.
