Explain these races
200m Fly - @ RAW our 200m fly's are conducted over 2 1/2 laps and not the 3 1/2 UCI standard. Riders line up in the back straight. As the previous rider races past, you are push started to start your warm up lap. On your second lap you want to be high on the track and gaining speed. Riders will dive down the track to receive the bell and timing will start 50m later. Your time will be stopped at the finish line. At the conclusion please be aware other riders are now on the track, so please vacate the field quickly and safely.

Sprint- at RAW Track, sprints are usually run as 4-6 ups over 3-4 laps the first few laps are usually spent sizing your opponents up and positioning yourself for the optimum explosion to the finish. It is not uncommon for a sneaky rider to attack early in the hope of holding a lead to the finish. The sprint is a test of power, speed and above all, tactics.

Should I go up a grade?
• At RAW you will be never be told what grade you have to ride.
• However your peers may politely suggest you change grades.
• Added to this, I may offer some advice, in an attempt to pre-empt your peers.
• In the history of RAW, the “choose your own” grade policy has only been seriously rorted on three occasions, are you interested in being the fourth?

Div 1 + 2 Handicap REPORT
This was an intriguing race

The start
Div 2b @ 0 min, Div 2a @1 min, Div 1b @ 4 min and Div 1a @ 5 min

In the initial phase of the race Div 1a (scratch) started extremely fast and closed in on the main group of Div 1b (chopping block) However, it was Div 2a who were struggling to make a dint on the lead of Div 2b (limit).  It was actually not a surprise considering a large portion of this group were protecting their overall position, while others were preserving their sprint.  It wasn’t long until this group was absorbed into Block.  We now had three groups on the road moving into middle section of the race

The Middle
One rider, his name Peter Milostic, would be the protagonist of the event during the middle phase. Milostic singlehandedly split the bunch and set about catching the lead group of div 2 riders. Milostic also sealed the fait of the div 2 breakway which included 2018 Cervelo series winner Aaron Paul. Almost simultaneously Div1a caught the remanence that Milostic had left behind. This gave the sctachies some much needed reinforcements especially in the form of Dhuez-Racing domestics.  We now had two groups on the road. The Milostic driven leaders and Dhuez charged chase 40 seconds behind.

The final
Just after 1 hr and 10mins of racing the two groups finally merged. It was expected at this point that the pace would slow somewhat. This never happened as the strong riders seemed determined to keep the group strung out and straight-lined over the final 15 minutes of racing.  Coming into the treacherous turn #8 and the final Kilometre, one rider had launched clear. It took a long time, form the sidelines to determine it was St George’s Luke Cridland. The front of the bunch was lead by the Dhuez train as they mowed down Cridland with 80m to the finish allowing Jordon Ross to take an impressive sprint victory.

A Fantastic Handicap with Div 2 riders taking 4 of the top 8 positions including 2nd and 3rd.

Div 3+ 4 Handicap
The race the nearly belonged to Division 4

The start
Div 4b @ 0 min, Div 4a @1 min, Div 3b @ 3 min 45 sec and Div 3a @ 4min 45 sec

From the start the fastest moving group was Div 4a who caught a somewhat lethargic (or was it frozen) Div 4b by the end of the second lap. They immediately upped the tempo of the front end of the race. Conversely the Div 3a (scratch) took an eternity to close the 1-minute gap to Div 3b (block). We now have two groups on the road Div 4 leading by about three minutes over the entire Div 3.

The Middle
Not much happened!  Not trying to be dismissive of the riders efforts and I am sure the riders in the bunches will have stories of epic attacks and Jens Voigt like turns. But from the side lines of the start-finish, all that I saw was the gap slowly diminishing like a wall with rising damp. By the 1 hour mark the gap was recorded at 1 min 10 seconds and reducing at a rate of 9 seconds a lap. It was now clear that Div 4 would win.

The extra Lap!
Some div 4 riders will read this with a bitter taste: “I added a lap”. The reason being that my calculations would see the Div 1 + 2 race catch and pass the Div 4 + 3 race perfectly on the scheduled bell lap of the race. If you are a Sydney cyclist, you know and understand the impact this has on the race result and if you are a race organiser or commissaire you know the complaints and finger pointing that is guaranteed to occur. Thus, I made the decision to call three laps to go instead of two. Did this affect the result YES. Did I make the right decision YES.

The final
Div 3 can thank their lucky stars with regards to the extra lap. As they only managed to catch the Div 4 riders after the bell. In fact the div 3 riders only managed to see the front of the bunch cresting the crucial climb 1.5km form the finish.
After 1 hr and 20 minutes of racing and 50.9km's it came down to a bunch sprint. Div 4 rider, Blake Callen lead it out and from where I was standing it appeared he got swamped by at least 4 riders including Campbell Fuller whom I was mistakenly celebrated as the winner.   The photo revealed a different story. Blake had amazingly held on to take an gritty win.

Div 5 Race report
Please accept my apologies as I am unable to write a report regarding the result of this race. Initial reports indicate that the bell was not audible to the bunch. Although I heard the bell and announced the last lap on the PA, I was very much pre-occupied with lap times to ensure Div 5 got a clean sprint (no passing grades).
These results will remain final and I sincerely do not wish to detract from the winners and placegetters of the race. However out of respect to those who have complained I will not write a report on this race.

RAW TRACK
2019 TEAMS NIGHT  #1

first race 7:30pm

Team Black V’s Team White
•   This is the first time we have tried a two-colour team’s night. But I assure you it will be awesome.

•   It is fair to assume that everyone has a Black and White T shirt at home
•   This week @ RAW Track "Bring it"
•   I will have about 30 of each to offer on the night, this is not going to be enough, so please remember to try and bring your own.

This week’s Races
•   Round 1   Warm up Scratch
•   Round 2 not this week.
•   Round 3 1 lap screamer
•   Round 4 Points Race
•   Round 5 Teams night Decider
•   Round 6 (time pending) RAW Crawl

Explain these races
1 lap Drag race- Riders draw lots to start in position 1-4 up the track. The riders start in a Time trial hold (No-Push) for whistle start. First one back wins. Easy

Point race- Riders must score points by sprinting for intermittent sprints every ?? laps for bonuses (5, 3, 2, 1 points). Lapping the field scores a bonus 20 points, consequently losing a lap to the field scores -20points. (however at RAW lapped riders are withdrawn with no penalty to their score) The final sprint is worth double points.(however at RAW we generally only have 3 sprints so-"no double on last sprint") Winner of the race is the rider with the most points, ties are split by position on final sprint. (however at RAW later sprints take precedence)

Teams night Decider:  Will announce on the night! The points you win through out the night will give your team an advantage going into this round.

RAW Crawl  (time pending)  - There will be two graded races for the RAW Crawl. A whistle will blow to start the race. Riders have 10 seconds to make their way on to the track; any rider not on the track by this time is eliminated.  Any rider who crosses the start line or comes off the track is eliminated. Any rider comes in contact with the track (foot down etc.) or another rider is eliminated. A second whistle will blow after 1 minute but before 2 minutes (random) this will indicate the start of the one lap race. You can work out the tactics from here.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q7e3Jmix648
If we are not through round 5 by 9:40pm this round will not happen

Teams Night is always one of the best nights of the year,
also one of the hardest to organise so please read on!

Special note for 2019
•   The colours for team’s night are, white and black. If the commentator refers to the “white-rider” or the “black-rider” it should not be considered culturally insensitivity or politically incorrect! It is simply referring to the colour bib the rider is representing.

Teams night.
•   This week will be one of RAW Tracks Famous Team Challenge Night
•   How does this work?

•   As you sign on you will be allocated and assigned one of two team colours.
•   Your team colour will be a T-Shirt you must wear.
•   Teams will be White and Black
•   Every race you will score 5 , 3 , 2 and 1 point towards your team score.
•   The point scouring rounds will be 1, 2, 3 and 4
•   Round 5 will be the decider (TBA on the night) the leading team will go into this round with an advantage = to the difference in points. The bigger the lead the more advantage.

What is the reward?
•   Members of the winning team will individually receive a bonus 10 points towards the TWE series point-score. The losing team will individually receive a bonus 5 points
•   Again this year riders will not earn individual points for placing in races.

Why are we doing this?
•   Because it is a heap of fun.
•   It is a great opportunity to socialise with people you normally wouldn’t
•   A Div 1 rider will intently watch how his Div 5 team mate is going and may offer a tip or two

Team’s night procedure
•   Bring along a Black and a White T-shirt (or Jersey)
•   If you didn’t bring your own Please ensure that when you sign on you receive a colour T-shirt
•   Record your colour on sign on sheet (in the correct column)
•   Please wear your colour T-Shirt

Team’s night seating

•   Again this year I will set up 2 flagged areas. A Black Area and a White Area
•   It is encouraged/ compulsory that riders from each team sit in designated area.
•   At the start of the night, all riders will be asked to relocate to their respective colour camps.

Trying to manipulate the Teams
•   Each Year, certain individuals try to beat the system by getting a particular team for whatever reason; (Friends, club mates or good riders)
•   To this I say “Don’t” Chill-Out, let the cards fall where they may. It is more fun this way.
