The first RAW Track Report of 300+ words on week 6 will receive a free entry to week 7 RAW
Division 5 – Heat 1:
They say that the lower divisions are the most dangerous, but going by all the unfortunate crashes in Division 3 last  night – Div 5 is the safest ticket in town – yet still getting more aggressive every week.

Div 5 podium places were all up for grabs last night in the absence of 2 of the woman's division favourites - Marian Renshaw & Amy Vesty. The warm up scratch race was (unfortunately for the girls) won by 3 males who managed to sneak into the woman's heat and use their testosterone wisely. Veteran David Lamb from DHBC controlled the race well for a strong win over 2 of the youngest riders in the series. The pocket size spinning machine Nick Edwards, and of course Young Thundering gun Harry Herne threw up a strong challenge for 2nd and 3rd respectively.

The surprise woman's race of the night was the 5 lap sprint that was dominated by Camilla Norman (Nicknamed Killer Camilla) who is more commonly renowned for being an enduro specialist - and has never sprinted unless it was to the bottle shop for some RED wine. There is some suspicion of an EPO violation given her remarkable distance win over the rest of the field whilst still sporting an injury from a previous fall. Courtney Puzicha managed to get a solid 2nd place. This is a young rider to watch as she seems to be quietly improving with  every race and always close to the top of the woman contenders.

Point a Lap race:  A hotly contested race between Vince O'Dwyer and spinning rocket Nick Edwards (god help us all when Nick is finally out of his gear restrictions). Several of the woman won a point early on, but the race was dominated by the 2 males continuously sprinting and jostling each other to win several lap points. Vince O'Dwyer won the race  to grab point number 3 on the 3rd last lap. Fortunately for me, Vince had worn out Nick's reserves, and I was lucky enough to take the last 2 laps (for a 2 point second). Finally a small win for us oldies. Go the "Grey" Jerseys.

I think for the Div 3 Dulwich Hill riders it was all about the point a lap race.  We had 5 of us in the first heat and we made sure we were together at the front.  Michael Clemont did a great job towing us through the first two laps droping back just before the line for the first point.  We copped a few words from Trudy as we went past her on the neutral lap, but the way we saw it was it was only neutral because it had no points on it, there was no reason not to use the chance to open up a bit of a gap.  The first two points went to Shaun Colley, then I took the next two, Tim Briers took one, then John Nguyen took two.  John and Tim dropped back and left Shaun and myself out the front, Shaun took one more.  Due to Johns efforts backing off the rest of the field I managed to take another two.  Not a bad effort, we managed first, second and third.  I'm not sure how the rest of the riders in the race felt about our tactics, but it definitely worked.

The combine ended up being interesting for us who rode it or at least attempted to.  As it was delayed by yet another Div 4 crash it ended up being a Div 1, 2 and 3 race.  I only lasted 5 or so laps, and I'm sure I wasn't the first to pull out.  It gave us a bit of a taste of was the Div 1,2 combines are like, and I think I'll be staying where I am for now.

Division5 July 24

"Grey power", I wish.  I spent 6 hours sitting in my car on Friday evening/night so that I could learn that a woman who is nearer to 60 than 50 can't keep up with other riders who are one quarter to one-third of my age.  This is particularly disappointing because I have been improving each year in Masters competition and on Wednesday nights at the Newcastle track.

I had even borrowed lighter better rolling wheels with greater psi and changed my gearing from 47/14 to 48/14 and did much worse than I had in the previous week on my first foray into Raw Track.

Unlike most male track riders of my vintage, I have not been racing (track or road) since I was in my teens, so I don't have extensive experience or better than entry-level equipment to make up for declining VO2max.

Also, the actual very start of the races is extremely competitive, compared to what I am used to.  How does someone progress from Novice grade to division5 Huh  My experience is too extensive for novice grade but I struggle with the starts.  In the "warm up scratch" race last week, my bike was bumped as everyone started to move.  As a mature rider with mature brittle bones, I backed off slightly as a result and found myself chasing for the rest of the race.  Division 5 races seem to start before one even gets on the duck-board.

I am not trying to push my bike (barrow) for 300+ words as I will need to regroup my thoughts before I return to Raw.  I am not in a rush to be left behind again just 7 days later, even jf I was to "enjoy" the privilege of free entry.

On a brighter note, I did feel I was starting to learn something the previous week, so I will try one more time in a few weeks.

Taiwanese riders make their mark on the Track

RAW Track was privileged to welcome Po Hung Wu and Ting Ying Huang to Australian grass roots racing. The two young riders pack some serious credentials with both having ridden in UCI World Cup events and World Championships.

Our first glimpse of the speed of the visiting riders was in the division 1 scratch race where Po Hung Wu was untouchable by the likes of Australian representatives Paul Fellows and Peter Lewis. Ting Ying Huang showed off her speed in winning the half field sprint putting all the boys in their place.

The real fireworks started in round three’s sprint event when Paul Fellows was determined to place himself on the speedster’s wheel; unfortunately Gavin White was already there. The ensuing battle resulted in Paul Fellows disqualification whilst Po Hung Wu continued on to win, oblivious of drama behind him.
Worth watching http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GaW_2E_bPU0

Po Hung Wu showed his versatility in the Round 4 endurance Point’a’Lap event. Po went on the attack mid race and stayed away for 7 laps picking up enough points to secure the win. The bunch (and me) had made the mistake in believing he was a sprint specialist, it was only later we were informed that he is the Chinese Taipei  representative for the omnium and additionally has many road race victories in UCI categorised events.

Ting Ying Huang made the biggest mark on the night in the final event with 1 ½ laps remaining Ting Ying hit out from second wheel  with impressive speed. Dramatically she began to drive past the leader (Bill Cox) but unfortunately collected his shoulder along the way. In a split second her bike was catapulted sideways and the young rider was thrown into a superman position on her way to collecting some splinters. Sam Wellbourne and Bradley Heffernan were also brought down but all riders were able to pick themselves up and exit the track without assistance.

Not so lucky was the track which bore the brunt of a high speed crash. Many thanks to Scott Mills who spent nearly an hour post event, sanding and filling the damaged section.

Friday 24h July 2009
RAW - Track racing at Dunc Grey - Divsion 3
I was hanging out on posting this one as I was hoping to link in a video, but I've seen grass grow quicker.

Warmup scratch race
Midfield finish. It was clear that his was not the night that I'd return to form

Win a point race
I knew that I wasn't going to be in on the money, so I discussed race tactics with the other DHBC riders and we decided that we would attack off the line with me doing the pulling, the first lap was neutral and after that it was one point per lap win. The objective was that I was to be rolled on the line, so not to take any point off a potential winner.
We got to the front in the chute and Trudy decided to get to the front of us, I was in 4th wheel behind 2 dhbc riders. We started up and I'd immediately hit the front, my rear wheel was skipping as I accelerated. Trudy bitched as we went past, but that's racing. The execution was perfect I'd pulled 4 dhbc riders off the front and they had 50 meters as they went across the line for the first point on lap 2. I rolled off, went back to look at Trudy and decided she wasn't a threat so rolled back to the bunch to see if I could control the pace but they had none of it so my work was done and I left the circuit. In the meantime the 4 dhbc riders worked together and took almost all of the points until George finally caught them, but by then it was too late DHCB scored 1st, 2nd and 3rd. When leaving the track at the end of the night I was walking behind Trudy and she was still bitching about it.

Race 3
I forget what this race was

Race 4 Combined top div4, bottom div3 scratch race
Really fast pace I struggled to hang on, but always found the energy to get back on when rolled off the back by dropped riders. Race was canceled with one lap to go due to a crash.

Race 4 Combined div3 div2 div1 scratch race
With time running out, they combined all the division, technically I'd just done my combine race, but I got back out, doing race 4 twice. I was still knacked from the other scratch race. The pace was vicious and I lasted only a few laps and dropped out. All of the other div3 riders were gone on the next lap.

Next weeks track racing was a much improved. Stay tuned for the update

Hi Mike,

Its great to see all DHBC riders at RAW on friday nights.

But i do note that your riders discuss "tactics" before a race and in some of your races it is highly evident you are working as a "team" especially when there are 3 or 4 or more of you in the one race.

In track racing its generally against ettiquite to race as a "team". Track racing is an individual sport where riders talents are up against each other in generally short sharp races. Working as a "team" against individuals is just not the done thing. Whilst not illegal or against the rules, its against the spirit of racing. So your comment "its racing" is a bit much. I can understand people bitching about it.

I'm not against an occasional collaboration, and i have been know to lead out a mate in a sprint or drive the pace from the start (at the request of the organiser) and sacrifice myself, but using Tour de France tactics in a 4 km race is a bit over the top.

Sorry just my feelings on the issue.

I don't ride track so won't know all the ins and outs. But where do you draw the line on collaboration given that you've participated too? What's acceptable collaboration and what's not acceptable? Looking at international pro level point races, it's clear team tactics are regularly in play and used to advantage, are they looked down upon? And what kind of uniquely TdF tactics are useful in a 4km track race? Or are track racing tactics being adapted for TdF?

I did a quick Google search and found the following intro article on CyclingNews.

http://autobus.cyclingnews.com/results/track/trackoverview00.shtml
Quote
2000 m Keirin (Men)... Team tactics are important here, as the leadout is often quite long. If one team can get two of their riders in the final, then they are at a distinct advantage.

If team tactic is important and acceptable for 2000m, then wouldn't it be even more important for a 4000m event?

Are there references on the net that talk about the etiquette of this aspect of racing?

Further, I understand that RAW Racing counts club team standing in the competition. So may I assume that team participation and winning strategies are encouraged by the organizer?

Info just in, Beanzy was spotted by numerous neutral parties after Fri's RAW racing in the Handle Bar Tavern, gathering intelligence on DHBC riders' post race debrief whilst hiding behind a beer in various poses.
